Spring is Right Around the Corner: Chimney Checklist

It might be hard to believe with the winter we’ve experienced, but spring is almost here, and that means it’s time to get out and see what Mother Nature has done to your home, particularly your chimney. Winters are tough on chimneys. Freezing temperatures, moisture, winds, and constant use take a beating on the internal and external structure.

Spring is the perfect time to assess the damage, catch minor issues, and make sure the chimney is ready when cold weather returns. Here’s a simple spring checklist that can help you avoid costly repairs and dangerous problems down the road.

Check the Chimney’s Exterior

Start with a visual inspection of the outside of the chimney. Walk around the house and look for signs of damage, such as cracked, loose, or missing bricks, deteriorating mortar joints, or a chimney that is leaning or shifting.

Freeze/thaw cycles can cause masonry to expand and contract, leading to cracks and gaps. Even small openings can allow water to enter, which accelerates deterioration. If you see crumbling mortar or damaged bricks, now’s the time to schedule repairs.

Inspect the Crown

The chimney crown is a concrete or mortar slab that sits atop the chimney to guide water away from the flue and masonry. It’s a simple, but important component, and is one of the most commonly damaged. Look for cracks or chips, pieces breaking away, and standing water on top of the crown.

A damaged crown allows water to seep directly into the chimney. Spring is when you want to repair or resurface it, especially before the storm season starts.

Examine the Cap

Another simple but important component is the cap. Make sure yours is secure and in good condition. Caps keep rain, animals, and debris from coming down the flue. Look for rust or corrosion, loose or missing fasteners, or bent or damaged mesh.

If you don’t have a cap, spring is a great time to install one. They’re inexpensive and can save you thousands of dollars in damage repairs and headaches caused by nesting animals.

Look at the Firebox

Now, take a look at your firebox. Even if you didn’t notice any problems during winter, there could still be damage. Look for cracked or broken firebricks, gaps in the mortar joints, and excessive soot buildup.

Damaged firebox materials can allow heat to transfer to combustible framing behind the fireplace, creating a fire hazard.

Check for Water Damage

Water is your chimney’s biggest enemy. Spring inspections can reveal moisture issues that you didn’t see during winter. Signs of water damage include white staining on bricks, rust on the damper or metal components, and musty odors from the fireplace.

Inspect the Flue and Liner

The flue liner protects your home by containing heat and combustion byproducts. Damage to the liner can allow heat or gases to reach the surrounding materials.

You can look up the flue with a flashlight, and if you’re not sure what to look for, call a professional. They can detect cracked or missing flue tiles, creosote buildup, or blockages.
